OUR MISSION
The Environment and Recreation Committee is a group of dedicated volunteers who work to preserve and enhance the quality of life through protection of the environment and promoting recreational activities for the Mount Vernon District. The community representatives of the E&R Committee provide a mixture of grass roots and independent technical evaluations of projects and issues that affect the Mount Vernon District.

MVCCA members are invited to provide public comment on the state of Fairfax County’s environment and how to improve it at the meeting of the Fairfax County Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) on January 11, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. in conference rooms 9 and 10 of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. EQAC has issued its annual report to the Board of Supervisors posted here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/eqac/report2016/. Topics covered include water quality, air quality, noise, hazardous materials, solid waste, stream valley protection, wildlife management, light pollution, visual pollution, energy, climate change response and adaptation, land use, transportation and ecological resources. With the EMBARK Richmond Highway Planning effort underway this is an important opportunity to share with EQAC the importance of including all aspects of our environment in this broad-reaching planning process. Changes to the Comprehensive Plan for our area will be made in the coming year and preserving, enhancing, restoring our environment needs to be an important part of this. Everyone wants clean, healthy water, but around 80 percent of Fairfax County’s streams are in fair to poor condition and sections of the Potomac River are impaired. The county is preparing action plans to reduce pollutants into local water bodies. One tool for controlling water pollutants is a called a TMDL, total maximum daily load. A TMDL is like a “water pollution budget” and it allocates reductions in pollution sources in an effort to meet clean water standards. To improve water quality, Fairfax County is preparing four action plans for TMDLs that have been established for several streams and for the Chesapeake Bay. Supervisor Dan Storck and Fairfax County officials invite the public to learn about the county’s draft action plans and to provide comments on January 3, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Government Center, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria 22307. Please spread the word.
